1.        Booker prize :

  • Australian novelist peter carey, who has won the booker prize twice before, is among the six short listed for this year’s award.
  • If he gets it again he would become the 1st writer to have won it 3 times.
  • He has been picked this year for parrot & Olivier in America, a fictional biography of the philosopher alexis de Tocqueville.


2.        Venice film award :

  • Sofia coppola’s somewhere, the tale of an actor who sees the emptiness of his existence through the eyes of his child, walked away with the top golden lion prize at Venice film festival.
  • The jury headed by director Quentin tarantino, unanimously chose Ms coppola’s film as the best movie at the 11-day annual festival.
  • Ms coppola is the daughter of director francis ford coppola.
  • The silver lion for the best director went to alex de la iglesia for balada triste de trompeta.


3.        2010 award for corporate excellence :

  • General electric company (India) & pepsico (India) are among 12 finalists selected for the US secretary of state’s prestigious 2010 award for corporate excellence.
  • The companies were chosen from a “ record number ” of 78 nominations submitted by American ambassadors around the world.
  • GE India had been nominated for the fostering of local partnerships & volunteerism, supporting health, education, innovation, disaster recovery projects across India.
  • Pepsico India, had furthered the cause of environmental sustainability through water conservation efforts that benefited small , marginal farmers.
  • This award has been given since 1999 to commemorate US businesses abroad.


4.        devdasi national award :

  • kerala’s mohiniattam dancer methyl devika shall be the recipient of the devdasi national award for dance this year.
  • The award has been instituted by devdasi national dance festival committee in bhubhaneshwar.
  • This award is for the dancer of any Indian classical dance style aged below 40 years.


5.        david perlman award :

  • Indian journalist pallav bagla has been selected for the david perlman award for excellence in science journalism given annually by the American geophysical union.
  • This is for the 1st time that India has been selected for this award.
  • The recognition is for mr bagla’s articles on the impact of climate change on Himalayan glaciers.
